help wanted won't restart update

Postby trac48 » Fri Jun 08, 2007 5:46 pm

Today I put the wheels and motor back on,
guess what, I could not wait to get it running; so I did: it ran for a while and ran out of gas, no problem, I put gas in it, started again, I moved the trotle up and it died again.

When I tried to restart, nothing happen, so I put the charger on the battery and tried again. All it does, it draws lot of current from my charger, it doesn't turn, it only hums. I tried turning the motor by hand,
it is not ceased?????

The only two wires that could be crossed are on the generator. I do not remember exactly were they were installed. Right now, I have two small wires on the F, one heavier on the other connection. :?: :?:

What is my problem?

Gilles   :D

Gilles - check and clean all ground connections and give the battery some time to charge fully.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks B.D.

I charged the battery, it became hot, so did the generator. So I unhooked
the connections on the generator
Still does not turn. :?: :?: :?:

I think your battery may be bad.

You had it wired wrong, and may have damaged the starter generator or the voltage regulator.

On the starter generator, the terminal closest to the engine is the FIELD or "F" terminal. The wire from the "F" terminal on the voltage regulator connects to the "F" terminal on the starter generator. The other terminal on the starter generator is the Armature or "A" terminal. The heavy wire from the starter button connects to the "A" terminal along with the wire from the GEN terminal of the voltage regulator.

The ground wire from the - post of the battery normally connects to the rear mount bolt of the starter generator, to help provide a better ground.

Paul is correct on the wiring and on how the wiring goes. I thought I would post this diagram of the wiring just to make it a little bit easier. :D

First be sure all the wiring is correct. If you can't read the fine print in the diagram cub61 posted, and provided the voltage regulator is the correct one, the gray wire goes from the BAT terminal of the voltage regulator (VR) to the same starter button post that the battery positive cable is connected to.

The green wire connects from the "L" terminal of the VR to the ignition switch.

The yellow wire from the "F" terminal of the VR to the "F" terminal of the SG.

The blue wire from the "G" or "GEN" terminal of the VR to the armature terminal of the SG.

The VR terminals should be marked F or FLD for field, B, BAT or BATT for battery, L for load, and the terminal on the other side or maybe the bottom, is G or GEN for generator. If it is marked GRD, that is for ground and is the wrong regulator. If the terminals are marked differently tell me how they are marked and it may be possible to still use it by switching the wires around.

The black wire from the ign sw to the + side of the coil.

Connect a good, heavy gage ground wire from the battery - post to the the rear mount bolt of the starter generator (the one that is loose in the last two pictures you posted) and then rotate the starter generator a little bit in case it is on a "flat spot of the armature, and then try to start it.

Paul,
the tractor was running fine before I removed 4 wires to take the motor off, #1 wier from the coil
#2 conections to gen,start.

Ireconected the gen-start. conection as the diagrame this morning, and put a juping cable from bat. to the loos bolt on the gen.as you could see it's stil loos  I rotated the gen to diffrent spot dido ! it trys to turn but not more.

no wires wher touched on the dash part.. Jus coil and gen.

It sounds like either starter generator (SG) or the voltage regulator may have been cooked or damaged when you hooked the GEN and FIELD wire to the field terminal of the SG, and It will take someone other than me to troubleshoot or tell you how to check them, because I don't know how. I can run the wires, but if I have to get inside either one of those I am lost, other than putting new bearings or brushes in the SG.

After writing the last post, I went back and change the ground wire like you said, and checked all the wiring again,I will post new pics. after lunch.

When I pushed the starter the wire red became hot so I will take the gen. to have it checked...
