Postby Rudi » Sat Dec 09, 2006 5:04 pm

Fellas:

Gord is playing with his 108 again. Time to get into the heart of the little beastie.. So, how does he take that 10hp Kohler out of the 108 :?: :?:

Are decent procedures listed anywhere :?:
Pictures :?:

All help greatly appreciated, and if one of the Cub Cadet Pro's has a few minutes, possibly a short step by step and what to look out for :?:

Mucho Gracias por favor mi compadres :!:

Hey Rudi,
I don't think there are any complicated procedures involved,
1. remove battery ground cable, unhook the wires to the ignition and starter
2. remove fuel tank and panel extentions as an assembly.
3. disconnect wires to coil and generator.
4. remove generator and belt.
5. disconnect and remove linkage to pto.
6. disconnect choke and throttle cables.
7. raise front of tractor so that axle can pivot and remove engine mounting bolts (a ratcheting wrench is a big help) and slide engine forward.
I have a copy of the service manual in PDF, but it is 32 megs, if you need it I can upload it to my website.
Dave

Rudi,
I listed removal of the wires to the coil and generator twice, just take 'em off once;-)

Rudi
Dave pretty much covered it. There should be 4 bolts through the frame into the oil pan, one on each side above the front axle, and two more about 6"-7" behind those. It may be easier if you take the grill housing off also, 4 bolts from the topside of the housing base into the frame. With everything disconnected, pickup and slide the engine forward to disengage the clutch drive disc and allow the drive shaft to come out of the pilot bearing. The 108 should have a flat oil pan and you can probably just slide it forward to disengage. The 12-16 hp engines have a deep sump in the pan and the engine has to come up before it will slide forward because the sump will hit the front crossmember as it is moved forward if it is not raised.

I will leave it there at least until the end of the year.

Dave:

Snagged the 108 service manual from your webspace.. Thank you! I will make sure Gord gets access to it. Any other 108 goodies that you think he might find useful????

This will eventually get up on the server as well, rest assured. As soon as I get the main Cub stuff all done and the server rebuilt.. then up goes the Cadet Stuff I have..

I appreciate as usualy Dave, thank you.

Dave and Paul....

Gord is concerned about the drive shaft and clutch assemblies.. how difficult are the procedures to separate all this stuff. I am hoping to be able to help him out as time permits, and I have never worked on a Kohler before..

Also, Gord will be perusing this thread, so he should see it.. I gotta get him to post a bit... he is the shy unassuming type.. a lot like me     :!:

What else is new huh  :?   :D :D

If you downloaded the service manual, just follow the instructions in it to disassemble the clutch/driveshaft assembly, but remember, that assembly is under quite a bit of pressure from the main spring, so make sure it is secure before removing the spirol pin at the rear of the spring, or you will have parts everywhere, and even worse, could be seriously injured.

Rudi Just to visit the driveshaft/clutch issue once more, the stock spring is approx. 800lbs. tension, the heavy duty ones we use for pulling approach 1200to 1500 lbs. CAREFUL!!!!!!!! We replace the roll pins in the shaft with dual split collars. They are available from Midwest Super Cub about $3.00 each. Also Kohler engine bases (oil pans) are pretty much specific to Cub Cadets. A lot of them interchange but the narrow frame C.C. needs the narrow pan to fit in the frame. Good luck. Frank
