Cub Cadet 1000, No Spark

Postby AntiqueTractorFan » Tue Sep 05, 2023 5:20 pm

I picked up a 76 Cub Cadet 1000 over the weekend and I’m working on getting it back running. As the title states, It doesn’t have any spark. The guy I bought it from sent a Pertronix coil with it and it seems like a bit much for a Cub cadet, so before I go start buying more parts for it, what should I check?

My picture of the coil was too large, it’s a Petronix 40,000 Volt 3.0ohm Part#40511

I would dress the points and set the point gap first…..then check the coil. Coils normally fail when running and running when HOT.

I would start by checking for battery voltage from the battery to the coil, then the ignition points. Then inspect the points.

Original type coil will be fine.

Edit, next day. My opinion, very simple ignition system; battery, wires, ignition switch, coil, points, plug wire. Just need to identify the problem.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I’ve narrowed it down to either Points or the coil, so I’ll address the points first.I noticed the coil seems to have a Liquid coming out of the where spark plug wire attaches.

That’s likely oil, and a dead giveaway of a coil failure. I’d plan on replacing both with good quality parts.
