Is the governor linkage bent? 1450 Kohler

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Fri Apr 03, 2020 2:22 pm

While I had this motor hanging in my shop from the chain hoist , somehow the bolt holding the chain slipped out and the motor hit the ground ( about 4 foot fall). It barely bent some of the tin and it bent the dip stick real bad. Is my governor lever bent too? Before I clean and paint the motor I want to be sure! I guess I need to locate a good dipstick too! The 1450 I have for parts is apparently an older model because it’s dipstick goes into the side of the block where mine goes straight in from the top. The dipstick that is broken/bent is p/n 4703805

Anybody have anything to add? I measured the linkage from the block in 2 places. One at the end of the arm and one towards the pivot point of the arm.

Looked at my 10 HP Kohler engine today. The governor arm is a 90 degree angle from the pivot, the rod coming out of the block. Yours may be bent a little. If it is, straighten it.

The dip stick. I would straighten the loop up a bit and JB weld the crack.

rod.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Yea, those are nothing to deal with. some pliers and just straighten them out. As long as that governor shaft turns freely, the arm is just a lever and the angle is not important. Same with the dipstick. Straighten her out and throw a little JB weld on it to seal the cap up.

Thanks guys. Just didn't want to mess up good paint, so I will bend that arm back outward until straight. I found a good used dipstick on ebay for $20 shipped so I'm happy.

Now I only just have to find a good used plastic OEM gas tank. When you find them those things are pricey for what they are! I have 2 and they are both busted open with large cracks.
