Well, I just couldn't pass it up!!!

Postby gitractorman » Mon Jan 23, 2017 2:51 pm

:Dito: So, I've always wanted an Original and I just happened across one that I couldn't pass up. This is a pretty cool little tractor, my grandfather or great uncle sold it to the original owner, when it was new, and we just bought it back from the original owner. I haven't gotten a great look at it yet, but other than a few dents/scrapes and a bent lifting rod, it's all together and working. The guy was mowing his lawn with it last summer and the clutch started messing up, so he decided to retire it. Not too bad for a 56-yr old lawnmower!!!

I'm not sure yet what my plans are for it, but I'm thinking about hitting it with some degreaser and an SOS pad, and just seeing how it comes out. Then fix the clutch and the few odds/ends. I'll make sure to keep everyone posted, but I won't be able to get my hands on it until the weather warms up.

Later,
Bill

Bill,
Yes, it is a belt drive to the clutch shaft but this one does not have the creeper gear. Many folks do not know that the first Cub Cadets were actually belt drive. It wasn't until the next generation, 70/100 came out that they made the frame wider so the engine could drop down and the drive shaft coupled directly to the engine.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'll keep you posted once I can get my hands on it.

Great news. Last weekend I finally started playing with this Original. Charged the battery, cleaned the fuel bowl, gave her some new gas, and it fired right up!! Runs great, and I've been driving it all around the yard. The clutch is slipping so I need to tear into that, but otherwise it's in real good shape. I gave her a Simple Green and SOS pad bath, and it cleaned up pretty good too. I think I'm going to take the hood to a friend at o body shop to see if he can straighten it out. That may be my deciding factor in keeping it original or doing a repaint.

I'll keep ya posted.

What IH actually did was flipped the frame upside down, to lower the engine. That is what eliminated the need for a belt. The original design had the channel iron facing down, which raise the engine up higher than what they needed it to be. This put the engine crankshaft a tad higher than the transmission. So they put a pulley on the end of the crankshaft and one on the front end of the drive shaft and ran a small belt between the two. When they redesigned the Cub Cadet with the 70 and 100 models, they flipped the channel frame upside down, which lowered the engine enough to bolt the drive shaft directly onto the engine, thus eliminating the need of the belt.
