I was digging around in boxes in the barn again and came across this.

I had to do some searching but finally figured it out. Anybody wanna guess what name it is. A few hints, it is made by W&B and it falls into the spanner family but has a specific name for it The name is stamped on the other side at the factory.

Rudi, you and Jim both came up with the same type, which I wasn't even thinking of. W&B has the name of their wrench on the back, but in thinking about it, Alligator would work also. It is likely anybody who googles "alligator wrench" just migt fin the name on the back side.

Is was interesting researching this.

I hope this link works. It appears that W&B used the term "bull dog" and that "alligator" may have been a more generic term. Note the W&B advertisement says "Bull Dog (alligator) type".

Jim, hit a bull's eye with Bull Dog. The backside says "No. 3 Bull Dog". I guess I have another addition for my shop wall.

Use It. They are great for square nuts and bolts.

I believe there is one of those in the tool box on "Pappy", my Grandfather's bought-new (and my first) Cub.
I'll try to check it for the name today.

Looks like it would make a better hammer than a wrench.

Ricky, it is 15" long and feels like it weighs more than a carpenters hammer. If it had a flat spot on the edge I could probably drive nails with it.

Looks like a "Fits All" to me in spite of what it says on it.

With the tolerances on 100 150 year old square nuts I can see where a wrench like that would be handy.

Bill,

A little bigger one to add to your collection:

Another maker but also marked "BULL DOG" ... only $10 (OBO!) so better jump on it!

I have seen those before and wondered what they were used for, now I know! :big afro:

Happy wrenching,
