Why such little use?
I understand that this is a cub forum but the M tractors section is barely used. Is that because they never go bad or never need work?

Re: Why such little use?
My guess is, although others including myself have other IH tractors the central focus of this forum is the Cub.
I have an M and a C , My experience has been that whenI have a question or share a comment other members have always responded. Enjoy the M they are fine tough machines, if you don' t have a Cub ,I suggest you take a hard look at one , they are nice and very useable little tractors.

Re: Why such little use?
Ms are the least common of all of them. You'll find the BN/B section just as devoid of activity. Most active sections are the C H and A/SA/100/130/140. I personally don't like Cubs, too hard/frustrating to work on in the field. 1 piece hood/grill and non-OHV kills it for me, not to mention the really weird PTO. Thats why I have a Super A and won't go any smaller. Cubs are great for small stuff like mowing, yarding, snowplowing, and hauling moderate loads though.

Demographics. In rural areas, farms are getting larger, requiring larger tractors and equipment. Urban areas, previously farm land, smaller plots.havoc1482 wrote:Cubs are great for small stuff like mowing, yarding, snowplowing, and hauling moderate loads though.
The M sized tractors are to small for many farming tasks and to large for small acreages.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Do you mean in terms of forum members or production numbers?
IMO the M is just about too big for chores that the Cub/Super A and similar models do very well. You can't just take off with one behind a half-ton truck to go to a show either. That said they're my second favorite letter series tractor after the Super A.
(I agree with you about some of the Cub's issues. I HATE that one piece hood/gas tank!)

Re: Why such little use?
I do have a cub but my father owns a m. I try to keep up to date on others fixes in case something comes up. I am debating which I should buy next, a H or M. Lots of H's around here, less M's. H's priced around 1300 to 1800 and M's 1800 to 4000. I like the options of a super MDTA but that is out if my reach.

Re: Why such little use?
In general, ALL of the "other tractor" forums here are pretty slow. They're relatively new forums for one thing. It takes time to build a following, but it is more difficult when there are already several other established tractor forums out there on the web already covering them.
Mostly they seem to be here for Cubbers who have gotten hooked on collecting tractors, and have decided to go bigger.
IH made more Ms from 1939-1952 than Cubs from 1947-1979.

An M is sure better than a cub for tractor drives!

Re: Why such little use?
Taken care of, an M will last a Long, Long, Long time. My granddad's M was a 1951 and hadn't had it's head off in 50 years (very well maintained). many farms can find use for one, but golly - - they are just so big for many smaller farms. Cubs, A's, B's, and C's are what everyone under 50 acres wants. You can haul an M with a half-ton truck a 16' car hauler, but you have to take care.
Ours would start when it was -30*F with a hand crank and summer gas in the tank. I loved it.

I've got an M, and it's mainly my mowing tractor. Other than a bad step down resistor (12v conversion), and a blown fuse - never had a problem with it.

Re: Why such little use?
this is a pretty old thread, but the comments are still reasonable. One thing is that this forum is mainly known for cubs, and all the people, manuals , etc. make it great. However, there is Redpowermagazine. com, and yesterdaystractors.com, which has both the general tractor forum, plus individual sites, such as one for Farmall/IH, John Deere, Ford, etc. By the same token, cubs are rarely mentioned on any of these sights.
P.S. I have a Farmall H that my dad farmed with for 45 years, I learned to drive on, etc. and I frequently ask my questions on one of those sites before I do here if I have a problem I cannot figure out.

Re: Why such little use?
Since getting my '57 Cub last year, I now lust after a Farmall 350 wide front.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work-Thomas Edison
