Bending back a shift fork ?

Hi Guys
My M will pop out of 5th unless it is in a pull or going down hill. 5th gear does look like it is fully engaging. (I have the hole open as I am preparing to install a pulley drive) A longtime tractor owner and mechanic told me over the years of folks shifting from 4th to 5th will bend the forks. He has heated the fork (not much heat) just below where it is welded to the shift linkage and bent it forward slightly and this solves the problem. Does anyone have experience doing this ? I am set on trying it... I think.
Thanks !
