Hello all, I took my tractor from the house to the pasture (about 6.5 miles) today. I can start from 5th gear which is quite fun to hear the motor lug down and build up speed, however............................................it only goes so far (maybe 3/4 of a block) before it just looses momentum like you cut the gas down to idle or just above. If I take the throttle lever and move it down to idle position, wait about one to two seconds then set it back it "reloads" for another half block or so. I don't know anything about these carburetors. This is my first tractor ever. I presume this is a carb or fuel pump issue?? I really need this thing to run smooth and consistent.fs

Start at the tank it's self and check for a steady fuel flow. Then check each part down to the carb for flow. Next shut off the fuel at the tank and remove the plug on the bottom of the carb and turn the tank back on again for a steady flow. Is this fresh gas? Is it ethanol? Also check the governor linkage for wear and lubrication. If all this checks out OK it's probably time for a good tuneup.

Fuel delivery to the carb is all gravity. Do as Dan said and check for dirt in the tank blocking the flow. Then check the screen in the sediment bowl. Next, move on to the carb. Your symptoms sound like fuel starvation.

OK will do. I don't see anything in the sediment bowl from a quick look. I will take the thing apart and look at that screen in the bottom. When I got the tractor I took the line off at the carburetor and drained the gas tank. (old bad gas) Since it is gravity fed I think the problem may lie in the carb. It never hurts to go through it all though. I do enjoy tinkering around on the 'ol beast.

Don't take anything for granted. I had one with a fuel problem and everything checked out OK. Turned out I had to cut the tank open. The crud was so bad it could not be cleaned be hand. It had to be sandblasted. Problem solved.

I had the same problem, what I do is take my air hose and shoot it up the line to knock the garbage out of it. Yes it will eventually settle back down and you'll have to do it again but it is only a temporary fix. I usually do it once a month. It just gets me by, my grandpa suggested it to me, he said they alway did it to the old 560 back in the day.
Try it see how it works.

ok i pulled the line off at the carb. Nice steady flow of fuel. I was using it today and noticed that it will also hang up on the throttle. That is to say, on occasion if I move the lever all the down to idle, it still stays at the higher RPM.

It could be something sticking in the governor.
It could be something sticking in the carburetor.
It could be that the last person to take the carburetor off didn't get it put back right. Inside that tube that runs to the front of the carburetor is a shaft that has to be aligned properly. There's a notch and a peg that need to mesh properly or the carburetor won't work right.
