Farmall MD Starting Valve Covers.

These questions are in regard to our 1951 Farmall M Diesel.

I have 2, 8 228 DF heads (both cracked naturally) that have different Starting Valve Covers (that go on top of the start valve) on each head. The parts manual states the 46 210 D for engine S/N 501 to 3720 and 250 535 R1 for S/N 3721 up. Neither has a part number on it anywhere. The size of one is 1.198" long by 1.242" Dia while the other is 1.058 long by 1.246 Dia. Does anybody know which size is which part number? Any assistance would be a great help.

One more question. Would anybody know the differences between a 8 228 D head and a 260 869 R51 head other than the serial number splits? Thanks.

The bigger valve is the newer one for the newer #----Not sure what the head diff. is, check the head gasket for fit on both of them!---Might be diff. #/location of head bolts.
I did have 2 smd's, but never did have any head problems with either of them, so I never had the heads off! thanks; sonny
