I removed the flywheel from our M. The ring gear looks good ,however there are stress cracks around the clutch bearing surface. I am wondering if I can machine them out. were these caused from overheating the clutch plate when the tractor was running?
Or do I need to get a new used one

Re: M flywheel Evaluation
most flywheels will have those cracks, they are from heat. A machine shop can reface it. Probably will not cause much of a problem if they are not severe though.

Re: M flywheel Evaluation
I set it up in our Mill and ran a program to cut .oo7 off the surface. I indicated the clutch base to get it parallel again, the surface deviated as much as .006
Really cleaned up nice
Ready to go.
Thanks for the input

Years back I cut quite a few on a lathe but never thought about doing it on a mill. But then ya gotta remember--- theres a lot I haven't thought about. Grump

Re: M flywheel Evaluation
I probally would have done it in the lathe but we do not have the throw. With our Cad and cam software and access to a cnc mill it was a snap

Looked real good when I was at Phil's. He has a bunch of cleaned up painted parts sitting in the basement too.
It was great to meet your son too. Mike is planning to make the York Rake we loaded work 1 point Hitch.
That cup of Coffee kept me going ok to Port Clinton for the night. Route 2 from Port Clinton to Cleveland was a breeze. Sure beat paying for the Ohio Pike. Beats me they charge a tax on Gas to pay for roads and then they want to charge you to use the road. Something wrong in this picture.
