Are there any physical differences between the two? How can someone tell the difference by looking at the two if the sticker on the gas tank is not on them?

I don't have an M, but as far as I know the Super indicated that the tractor had hydraulics. I do have a Super A and have seen many A tractors and what you notice right away is the hydraulics are missing.

SM was built in 3 stages, improvements included cam driven live hyd, disc brakes battery under the seat, and independent pto and TA in 54. Best to check serial tags and casting numbers as a lot of M's have been upgraded to live hyd.

The best way to tell a M from a Super M is look at the serial number tag. The serial number on a M starts out with the prefix FBK. A Super M will start out with F-### or L-###.

The early Super M's were very similar to the last straight M's--non-live Lift-All hydraulics, battery under the gas tank, etc. Some of the very last M's had IH FACTORY disk brakes so that's not a 100% indicator either.

The one sure fire way of telling them apart is the brakes.

Super M has disc brakes . There by the drivers feet and there cast iron covers about 12 to 14 " in dia.

"M" the brakes are band and the covers for them are sheet metal.

But there was a few Ms that a disc brake conversion was done to , it was after market.

While some M's had Lambert aftermarket disk brakes installed later in life, the very last M's had IH factory disk brakes, just like the Super M. The sure way to tell a M from a Super M is to look at the serial number plate.
