Live PTO on a Super M

I have this nice Super M and I am wonder ing if it is possible to put a live PTO assembly off a 450 on the SM. Would it be live or would I have to swap rear ends and make my own SMTA. I would like to make it Live so I can put a pull behind mower on it and not have to worry about it when I have to cluth.

Also, does the front hood and grill off a 450 match up with a SM.

Thanks
Jason

PTO's won't interchange. Hoods and grille are different. I'm not 100% sure if a 450 rear end would bolt up to a Super M clutch housing--I think you would have to go all the way up to the engine-bellhousing connection, which would make the whole tractor longer than a standard Super M, which means none of your other Super M parts--steering linkages, throttle, choke, etc. will work. You'd probably be money ahead to just buy a 400 or 450 and keep your Super M intact--it would be a shame to chop up a good tractor. Do you have an overrunning clutch on your Super M? If not, I would put one on and just "live with it."

I have not had personal experience with it, but form what I have read on the Red Power Magazine site, you would have to replace everything from the engine to the rear. The engine to tranny driveshaft was part of the live pto. As an alternative, they are hard to find, but M&W, and maybe another or tow made a conversion unit that went in place of the left brake (still had full braking), and allowed the tranny to free wheel, while keeping the pto running. It worked by disengaging the final drive gear (inside the tranny). Ones for disk brake versus drum brake do not interchange becuase of the different shafts involved.

I was just wondering if I could swap out Pto Assemblies and go with theone off the 450. I won't bother, one of these days I'll find myself a 400 or 450 with a fast hitch for reasonable money. 1000 or less. doesen't have to be running, a running tractor takes the fun out of things.

What about a 400 rear end. Arn't they the same as the SM.

Thanks Jason

The Super M rear end will not swap with anything else. It is more like a straight M other than a little different gear ratios. Super MTA, 400, 450 have more in common with each other than the Super M.
