Engine Re-assembly and first oil change interval

Postby phill_mi » Thu Jan 05, 2023 8:04 pm

Regarding my '63 Farmall 560 Gas I had removed the oil pan, oil pump, and bearing caps to inspect for a problem, which thankfully turned out to not exist. The local old tractor guru advised me to put it back together using plenty of engine assembly lubricant. So my question is, now that I have it running, how soon should I stop and change the oil again? I did not change any parts, except new gaskets.

My other project is a complete rebuild, with new bore, valves, pistons, rings, etc. for my '48 Cub/C60 engine. I assume those parts will need a break-in period but I wonder the same question, after using engine assembly lub, how quickly once it is running do I need to change the oil again?
Thanks, Phill

On the 560, you can just resume your normal oil change routine, the use of assembly lube will not effect that.

On the Cub, you should give it a short (3-4 hrs.) run in period, then change the oil and filter. Once again, the assembly lube won’t effect this.
