Super M -eastern Iowa Tractorcade

Just finished the eastern Iowa Tractorcade, and my Super M developed a miss today. Running in high gear part throttle climbing a grade. Cranking up on the throttle cleared it up for a while.

I’m not sure if the engine is getting warm enough to be considered normal operating temperature. The temperature gauge is nonfunctional as it never moves, however I can hold my hand on the radiator cap fairly comfortably after a 45 mile ride.

Is there a thermostat in the engine (What temperature should it be?) and is the radiator cap a pressure cap? If so what should the pressure rating be? I want to check these before I start with changing plugs or looking into the carburetor mixture

There is supposed to be a thermostat in the housing above the water pump but it could have been removed. I think there is only one temperature range thermostat available any more. They are about $35 and available at a CaseIH dealership or just about any online tractor parts dealer. The caps are pressurized and I'm not sure what they open at, but probably around 7-10 psi.

The investigation continues Super M temp is fairly normal with a non-contact thermometer, found the sensing bulb coiled up and stuffed up on top of the motor. Found a 3/8” plug threaded into a threaded hole in the rt. rear of the cylinder head over #4 cylinder spark plug. There is supposedly a 1/2”x3/8 flare (?) pipe adapter that is supposed to be installed between the temp probe and the head.

Rite now I’m cornfrused!!!!

The fitting you are missing is a special temp gauge fitting. You mentioned 3/8 pipe, are you sure it's not 1/2"?

I wish I were mistaken, the gauge fitting will thread into the hole in the block but then leaks around the sensor tube

Found the issue!!! A PO twisted off the hex end of the sensor fitting flush with with exterior surface of the head. 4 saw cuts and a bit of hammer & chisel work the obstruction is removed. Then the rain started, installation to be completed tomorrow, lord willin n the crik don’t rise

The Snowball continues

I finished installing the temperature gauge today and pressure tested the cooling system, no leaks at the sensor BUT found a leak at the top radiator hose at the radiator. upon inspecting the other radiator hoses I decided the rest also should be replaced. This necessitated removing the thermostat housing, therefore making the decision to replace the thermostat and gaskets wise. Further inspection also indicated that the system needs to be cleaned and flushed. chased parts today, hopefully will finish tomorrow.
