Back With 2 New Tractors

Postby ClassicTractorProfessor » Tue Dec 01, 2020 9:12 pm

Few months back I went through some family issues that left me not interested in any of my projects, and as such I was away from several forums I belong to, including this one. Through that whole ordeal I also sold my 48 M, a move which I now regret. But in time I came back around and have added a couple more projects.

First one is a 1953 Farmall Super M LP with a single front wheel. Seems to be a pretty rare bird around this part of the country, LP tractors are very common here, but they are all Case and John Deere. Mine is also the only one I've seen locally with a single front wheel, most of the M's around here were all fitted with wide fronts. I bought this tractor from the estate sale of an old friend of mine who passed away a couple years ago. His daughters had several people interested from miles around, but I was able to score a better deal as they really wanted their dad's tractor to go to someone local who knew him. It had been sitting for several years, but with a new battery and a quick filing of the points we had her running. Now for the bad, the shifter will move side to side with ease but will not move forward or rearward into any gear, I'm assuming the shift forks are stuck from sitting for so long.

Second tractor is a 1951 M with factory wide front, almost identical to the 48 I sold. This tractor is very special to me as it belonged to a very close friend of mine, whom we sadly lost on October 30th. I had been storing this tractor at my place for the better part of this past year, and after his passing I talked with some of his family and it ended up becoming a permanent resident here at the farm. I have rebuilt the carburetor and got it running, but need to find two new rear tires and rims. Planning on eventually restoring it and taking it to some of the shows that Rodger used to attend in his memory.

congrats on the new tractors. I am sorry to hear about you parting with the M. LP farmalls are what I always thought they all looked like as we had 2 LP M's on the farm growing up, one was a super. Glad to hear you have a couple that will always keep your friends remembered.

I have a single wheel 1949 C myself, the only single wheel C I have seen. Most here are the 2 wheel narrow front Cs or Super Cs. I have been toying with the idea that I need an H. But as soon as I get an H, I'll probably start thinking I need a M, so on and so on.

As for as LPs, I haven't seen one here locally myself, but there are probably some here. And congrats on getting the two project tractors.

Got the old M fired up this morning. First time she’s moved on her own in about 7-8 years. Pulled her out into a level spot in the backyard, have a buddy from work coming out next weekend to help me swap the wheels and tires off the Super over on to it until I can afford a set of new ones

Sounds like your plate is full. Sorry to hear about your family friend’s passing. Don’t know what meaning the M you sold had, but at least the void was filled with two tractors full of memories.

Thanks, I am very proud to own both tractors. I actually have two of Rodger's tractors, the 51 M and I also bought my 53 Case from him as well.

The 48 I sold was a good tractor, but I didn't have any real attachment to it. I bought it about a year ago to use brushbeating around the ranch, the Super M will probably take its place as the working tractor around here, while the 51 is gonna be a show tractor when it's all done
