Friends,
I pulled the gear shifter and cover plate off of my new project this evening and I found so much rust. Not solid rust, but quite a bit; I'll try to compress some of the pictures and upload them here. I went ahead and put the shifter, plate, and arms into my electrolysis tub to start working, and sprayed as much as I could internally down with PB Blaster and diesel. I knew this was going to be a challenge when I brought it into the barn, but gee whiz... I think I'm just overwhelmed more than anything. Any advice, thoughts, good humor, prayers, and words of advice and support are both welcome and encouraged on where I go from here. I've just never rebuilt an entire tractor before

Re: 1940 B transmission
I pulled the cover on my '46 B and found clean, but badly worn/chipped gears. If you have any that won't clean up, this guy (https://vintagetractors.com/ihcabctrans.html) has pretty fair pricing on used gears and parts. I bought replacement 3rd/4th gears from him for $75/shipped.

Re: 1940 B transmission
Given what is seen in your pictures, I'm guessing that you'll need to replace at least a bearing or two. At this point, I'd recommend stripping the rear end and getting that transmission apart. Then you can clean up the gears and the shafts and make appropriate judgments on what to replace.
There are many threads on here pertaining to Cub transmission rebuilds. Not so much for the B. If you haven't already, go to "Quick Links" above, click "PDF Manuals", and download the service manual and parts catalog for the Farmall A (which also applies to the B). The service manual doesn't contain many pictures of the transmission, but does detail the steps of disassembly, reassembly, and shimming for proper pinion alignment.

Re: 1940 B transmission
The parts catalog shows a decent exploded view of the transmission and differential. The construction of the trans is very similar to that of a Cub, so it wouldn't hurt to study this transmission rebuild thread: http://farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=47391

Re: 1940 B transmission
Keep in mind that there were 2 versions of A/B transmission. A '40 models probably has the early style. The page Urbish posted is late (added oil slinger gear).

How do I determine which one I have? Any advice would be well appreciated.

Re: 1940 B transmission
The late has an oil slinger (#40 in above diagram) and the oil troughs cast into the sides of the case predominantly slope down to the back. The early has no slinger and the troughs slope down to the front.

Re: 1940 B transmission
Good deal. I'll look at it tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help.
I think with the diagram above, I can get it apart and back together. While I'm in it, I'll go ahead and replace the bearings. Any other suggestions while I have it apart? The heaviest work this tractor is going to do will be cultivating some sweer corn or maybe a couple areas of black eyed peas or watermelons.

This unit has a slinger and troughs that slope to the front and to the back.
