My "new to me" 1946 B had the float stick open and die out in the middle of the field over the weekend. Of course it has no starter, so I turned the fuel off and cranked and cranked until I cleared the excess fuel and got it running. I drove a little ways on what fuel was left in the bowl, then jumped off to crack the fuel open briefly to refill the bowl, then turned the fuel back off. This worked to get me back to the barn.
I took the carburetor off last night and cleaned several layers of paint off to read the numbers so I could get a Zenith rebuild kit. The numbers stamped on the carb are 224749 10981A. I looked this up and it turns out that this carb is for an Allis Chalmers WD/WC/WF.
So now I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and rebuild this carb and put it back on or if I should instead focus my effort on the locating correct carburetor.
Any thoughts?
Jim

I think it's just personal preference Jim. If you want the look of original then you will have to find one. If you want function, rebuild the one you have and roll on. You could always rebuild what you have and be on the lookout for an original that way you don't have to pay a high price to "have it now".

I wouldn't get to excited about the numbers on the carburetor. Some Zenith carburetors have an adjustable main jet which is easily adjustable to match the tractor. And then the carburetors internal components were changed to match the application.
I would go ahead and rebuild the Zenith, adjust the carb to the tractor, and see how it works out.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: 1946 B - Wrong Zenith Carburetor
The rebuild kit should be arriving by mail with a bunch of other parts for my H in a couple of days. I'll report back on how it runs with new guts. The root of my concern is that the engine in the Allis WD is over 50% larger than the one in the Farmall B. The jets are probably way off.
I did buy a box of 20 or so Zenith carbs at an estate sale a few weeks ago, several of which look like they'll bolt right up to the B. I looked them up and most are from various Clark forklifts. If this one doesn't work out, maybe I'll experiment with some of them. There is even a rare VW carb off an early 50's Beetle which is going to go straight on ebay.

Well, I went ahead and rebuilt the carburetor and it seems to run pretty good with some governor/throttle linkage rod adjustments. So I guess I'll run her as-is for the foreseeable future!
