Farmall B Questions

Postby vb1666 » Fri Nov 27, 2015 8:52 am

Ok I have a Farmall B with a serial number tag with FAB-58041, I can not find the serial number on the engine, the date code on the block is 10-18-W, and the date code on the Head is 4-17-W, the date code on the clutch housing is 9-17-J, I am thinking the engine has been replaced would you agree.

I am thinking the engine is 1951 and the rest of the tractor is 1941 but not sure because the serial number is 1941 but the date code on the clutch housing is 9-17-1940.

My second question is did they ever paint the tractor orange from the factory, it appears that the original paint was orange and then has been repainted red at some time.

Thanks for your time in advance my son & I are just getting started on restoring this tractor, just pressured washed it yesterday and got some of the 70 years of dirt/oil/grime off of it.

Welcome to the forum. I am sure the experts on here will weigh in on your questions. Regarding color, some highway department tractors may have been orange from the factory. Check this thread from a Redpower Magazine forum. http://www.redpowermagazine.com/forums/topic/77991-orange-100-farmall/

There is always some scattering of the dates on the casting codes. Your serial number is relatively early '41 so I don't think a 9/17/40 date is out of line. Entire replacement engines would have had a stamped-in engine number. A replacement bare block would have remained blank, could have been stamped by a dealer that installed it. You might double check the engine number boss for a lightly stamped number. Sometimes the stampings are hidden by paint, especially after several repaints.

As already stated, orange was a common industrial color and used on many highway mowers. It would have been more common on an A than a B, due to the highway mower usage. Is the orange only showing on the engine or other parts of the tractor? If engine only, it may say something about the origin of the engine.

I remember reading in one of the history/restoration books about red pigment being in short supply because of the war. Some tractors were reported to have left the factory a little less red than normal. Maybe yours was one of those.

The red pigment shortage was immediately after the War, not before or during.
