Muffler For B Farmall

Postby Cub-Bud » Sun May 10, 2020 7:47 pm

Isn't the correct muffler for a Farmall B tall and thin :?: I am going to replace the muffler on my '45 B and want to go back with a correct style/look.

I replaced the muffler on my '44 B with one from Rural King. Here is the cheapest Steiner sells: https://www.steinertractor.com/IHS309-V ... dy-Muffler

The one at Rural King was a lot less. This is the one that will fit your B. https://www.ruralking.com/stanley-muffl ... uffler-ih3

And I really like the "Made in the USA" label on the Rural King muffler!

Some of the stores will have it in stock - mine did when I bought it back in the fall. It looks like they're out of stock now, and according to the link, they only have one online left. Time for Rural King to order more and restock.

I did a few minutes of searching old advertisements, and it appears that the B (at least in the advertisement photos) had a short, fat muffler. I'm not sure if you can even get that style of muffler anymore.

That is what I found also - the B and BN, as well as the A, had short, fat mufflers.

Early tractors had a short, fat muffler. Today, for a B, this is the closest thing to the original. It has the correct outlet diameter and it will sound like it's supposed to: https://www.steinertractor.com/IHS497-R ... ty-Muffler

Most of the aftermarket mufflers have outlet pipes that are too large.

Yeah, Al pointed out the best match. Most of the replacement mufflers are made by Stanley. They have an oversize outlet and nearly everybody that has one complains about them being too loud. The one Steiner sells is a pretty faithful reproduction of the mufflers that were available in the 1950s and I don't know how much before that. I suppose the Stanley muffler may be a better match for Steiner's IHS2535, for the 140 - 404.

The very early mufflers (vintage 1939) had short outlet pipes as seen in the ads/brochures like Urbish posted. The outlet pipe on them got lengthened to be similar to the Steiner muffler but the construction remained the same.

I have no idea what the story was, but wonder if the lengthened early style and the Steiner style were from different suppliers and used for a while at the same time.

Many years ago I was designing a military generator that would be mounted on the exterior of an armored tactical vehicle. It used a 3cyl, 28hp Kubota diesel engine and needed to be very quiet. I used one of these spiral engine silencers and you could barely hear the exhaust at all. When I saw the short, fat ones in the advertisements they reminded me of it.
