Front wheel repair

Postby mcwinter » Mon Apr 15, 2019 9:07 am

I recently noticed one of the front wheel bearing sets appears shot on my B. Haven't removed the wheel yet, but there is a gap between the spindle and wheel hub with something extruding out (seal retainer?). The tractor is located 2-1/2 hours from my house so it helps to have everything ready when going over to make a repair. Can anyone recommend a set of parts to have available before I remove the wheel? I see a wheel bearing kit available from Steiner that may cover what I need.

Thanks

You can download the parts manual for the Farmall B (Farmall A-B Parts Catalog TC-26F OCR) from this site. Click Quick Links (top left)->PDF Manuals->Farmall A, Super A, AV, 100, 130 and 140->Parts Catalogs->Farmall A-B Parts Catalog TC-26F OCR.pdf

About half way through the manual there is detail on the tricycle type front wheels and associated IH part numbers for everything you will need. I have attached a screenshot of the diagram in the manual. The part numbers are on the pages that follow.

To jack it up, just run the good wheel up on a couple pieces of 2x6.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Finally got around to installing new bearings on the failed front wheel on my B. Upon attempting to tighten the castle nut, I discovered why there were extra washers behind the nut when I took it apart, and probably why the inner bearing was destroyed. The spindle threads were worn and stripped preventing proper tightening of the bearing assembly. Now the cotter pin is the only thing really holding things in place. For next step, is it possible to have the axle spindle threads recut to a smaller diameter or do I need to start looking for a replacement? If replacement, can I just get an axle and reattach to the bolster or should I just look for a bolster / axle assembly?
