Belt for hammermill

Just picked up a Wards grain buster hammer mill at a auction, Going to go get a belt made to drive it with my H, Does anybody know what length and with?

My answer is based on what we use on a grain separator at our show. The width should be the same or a little less than the narrower of the two pulleys. The length depends on how far from the tractor you want the hammermill. The drive belt on the separator keeps the steam engine about 75 ft away to prevent sparks from igniting the chaff. I don't think you'll want to walk that far to make throttle adjustments, etc. Hopefully you'll get some responses from the guys that have mills or grinders.

Also not rotation direction of the mill, you made need to give the belt a half twist to get the right direction.

Or spin the mill around 180. That's a horizontal spin not a vertical spin. A vertical spin makes it hard to get the corn to go in

It seems like I heard or read somewhere that a flat belt in these applications needs to be long enough to sag, the belt weight keeps the belt on the pulley. I know I had a short belt on my C.S. Bell hammer mill before the fan came apart and had trouble keeping it tight enough. Has anyone any input on this? If my Dad or Great Uncle were still around, they would have the answer, wish I'd paid more attention. John

I've heard the same thing about the sag. Seems to me that I remember that it works better than trying to pull the belt tight with the tractor, and is somewhat more tolerant of slight misalignments too.

Also seem to remember that the half-twist is good for belt stability as well. Less slapping and flopping.

Have a relatively short belt on my burr mill 4" wide- ( 8' between tractor & mill)- alignment is main criteria!

Have a looong belt for my #6 mill. Getting aligned is something I am still learning. I figured out the last time I ran it at a show that I need to stake the mill down so it will stay put.
