Farmall H transmission

Has anyone ever replaced the input shaft seal and bearing on an H? Can it be done without splitting? what is involved?

A cousin's S.i.L. took pity on me and has offered to change the seal for me. Boy is he gonna be in for a surprise on this job. I did clean the inside of the torque tube the best I could. Before

Looks nice and clean (or there-abouts). Be sure to replace the rubber washers on each side of your tapered bolts. Might also weld up the tapered bolts if really worn. That was the advice I received, but mine were not that worn.

I kinda doubt that. I can come up with several people I could volunteer to do it. Some are even mechanics!

I repaired a transmission on an H about 10 years ago or more. Bearing went out on input shaft.
The front seal job is easy with the hydraulic system removed like yours is.
I am suppose to pickup another H to fix. The guy has not called me back yet.

Can all be done in frame, just remove shaft. The input cupler can be a pain to get out as they have a tendency to look on to the key way hard.

A neighbor came up and applied his big foot to an extension on the ratchet while I held it all in place and we got the pump drive lug off the transmission. It looks like we bent the bar we had stuck in the yoke of the input shaft to hold it though.



The drive lug came hard all the way, and by the looks of the threads I better call JP Tractor Monday to order another one.

Cousin's son in law that was interested in helping never showed up, so now that things have slowed down, the garden turned under, Scrivet's tractor shipped off, and Christmas parades out of the way, I am going to tackle Dad's H. I rigged up a piece of chip board on some 6x6 cribbing to get me within easier reach of the drive shaft, etc., but no longer than I can lay on that board at a time this job may take a while.

John im scheduled home Dec 22 and don't go back out till Jan 5. Excluding the holiday days, if u pick a day that u wanna work on that, I will volunteer a days work to ur project. If the garage is semi warm and you can hand me the tools we"ll see if we can git er done

Semi-warm I can arrange for, unless the temps are extreme. I have 2 sets of the double dome radiant heater that mount on 20lb. propane tanks, plus a torpedo type propane heater, along with 3 full tanks.

Jesse (10 year old neighbor across the creek) came over today and while I laid under the tractor he passed me parts and tools. I had to stop a time or two and let my back relax, but we got the drive train back in. While I have some time I think I will rebuild the worn out governor and check the leak in radiator. Now to save up enough money to refill the transmission. 5 gallons.
