Farmall H radiator

Postby Jason (IL) » Wed May 28, 2014 9:54 pm

Any tips to get the radiator studs out? They have pins through the studs and it can not seem to get a good grip on the studs. Plus they are in the best place too, almost no way to get a wrench in there. Need to get it off to replace water pump, it is leaking out the front.
I fought with it tonight for a half hour and quit because I knew I wouldn't get anywhere. Thinking of getting a torch and cutting them off but don't know if I can get it there do to the small opening. I have already broken off the drain pipe. It broke pretty easy.

Any tips or just try and cut the studs?

Thanks

Even though mine were rusty, they did come out after using some penetrate. Yes, they are in a tight spot; both of them. I don't know how to advise you on this. If the radiator is trashed, then cutting the studs won't matter. Wish you the best. :coffee:

And conversely, if the radiator is good, you will probably destroy it long before you get the cut off studs out. I don't know if you can get in there with a nut cracker, but I would try it before cutting the studs.

My biggest problem is the lack of space to get to to studs. I also have cotter pins through the castle nuts and they have broken off now and can not get through to the back side to grab the rest. Once I get the radiator off I plan to do new studs. I will have to heat them to get out but I did it on the M with good results. Radiator is good and the only reason I am trying to get it off is to replace the water pump and belts easier. I have broken the drain tube off, it basically rusted off. I will try a nut splitter this weekend, that sounds like it may work, I never thought of it.

It's been my experience that if the nuts didn't turn off the studs, the studs turned out of the radiator.

In a nut-shell, something always turned.
