Wiring Question

1945 Farmall H
Battery Ignition
12V battery when I bought it.

Took off the wiring the PO had done (looked to be a modified 12V conversion) and rewired per wiring below:

The only thing I did differently was not put the wire from the F (field) post on the generator to the field resistor at the light switch or any downstream wiring to the lights.

I installed a 6V battery and hit the remote starter. It fired right up and stayed running as long as I held the starter switch down.

What do you think caused that?

Not sure which type of starter switch.

Move the wire from starter switch to the amp meter to opposite side of the switch. That wire should be on the battery cable feeding the switch from the battery. The side of the starter switch that is hot all the time.

Yeah, I remember now. I remember thinking that the diagram shows the starter switch on the starter, but it says that some are remote (like mine). So, I ran the heavy battery cables to/from the remote switch, but left the smaller wire (shown on the diagram) still on the starter. Therefore, when the starter switch was in contact, that smaller wire was getting juice from the battery and feeding the coil. But when I took my hand off the switch, it lost power.

Makes sense in retrospect. Thanks Eugene. Sometimes I just need an opinion or different viewpoint to make it "click" in my head.

Since I'm wanting to convert this back to 6V, I'm pleased to know that it can start/run per the stock diagram.

Now, I just need to check out the generator to see if it is producing a charge. Thanks again!

I had never thought much about it, since that diagram works for a cub, but as Eugene said, an H normally uses a separate starter switch. I never saw an H or M with the switch on the starter. Cub, A, B, Super a, C and Super C, yes, but not H or M. I think Cub bud ran into the same thing when he and others redid Dad's H.

Apparently, there was a starting switch on the starter at some point (early?), because the Parts Manual shows it:

I never saw one made that way, but anything is possible. I have some pictures of H serial 533, but cannot tell from them which type switch for sure, but I think it has the push button back on the tank support

If you click on Rudi's manuals and scroll down to Bob Melville's Wiring Schematics in the second section. There are variations there and you'll have to pick the one that fits your H.

Drawing #4 is with a magneto why wouldn't that work?
