I have new bearings and races for the front spindle on my H. My question is the new dust seal looks nothing like the old one and I am wondering if anyone has experience installing the new style seal and how far onto the spindle it goes. Any ideas?

The old ones I think are leather, new ones being rubber and a spring.Flat-side out should keep the grease in.I repacked mine when I got the tractor and changed the width of the wheels.Didn't do the seal, was not leaking.Probally should have though. My wheels wobble[why I repacked the bearings]but was not the cause of the wobble.Gear in the streeing does that.I learned from a friend of mine on that.Still wobbles, trying tightening the nut, still does ,so I need a gear I guess. Kevin   :? :?

I would trial fit the seal on the spindle to make sure it fit correctly.

If it is correct leave the seal on the spindle and install the bearing (cone) next on the spindle and observe the realtionship of the seal to the cone as they set on the spindle. This will give you an idea of the how far the seal will need to seat into the hub bore so that the seal matches up to the spindle surface without being too deep or shallow. Typically the seal will face will fit flush with the outer seal bore on the hub, but not always, the above check will help in the correct installation and eliminate errors.

Hope this helps

Mark

I think I have it figured out. Know I know I have the "adjustable width hubs" and they have 2 grease retainers (which I don't have and ruined the old ones getting the old races out.) I think I can get by without them, but I would have to pack the entire inside of the hub with grease, so I am going to see how much they are from the dealership. I will post my results, hopefully positive.
