I have the opportunity to pick up a Farmall H. Can anyone tell me how readily parts are available, what the capacities are, speed and direction of the PTO, etc, etc? I'd like to be semi-knowledgable whe I go see it again.

There is a web site devoted to the H http://www.farmall-h.com/ that will give you all the basics. Parts are very easy to come by. Even the dealer can get most anything and OEM tractor makes tons of stuff also.
It has a standard PTO for speed and direction. About 27HP. 5 speed tranny unless 5th is locked out. Gear ratios are variable in the tranny. Lift-all belly mounted hydraulic pump 750psi 10gpm. Basically its a real good solid dependable tractor.

Go for it!

I have a 48 H, and it's been in the family since 1967. It get's used about 300 hour's a year for plowing snow, mowing with a 7' sickle mower and other various chore's. All we ever had to replace on the h was plug's, distributer cap, wire's, point's and keep filling the fuel tank  . I love it, it start's exellent in cold weather and is quite fuel effencient. You'll find lot's of uses for it, trust me :!:

Just a quick FYI, but not all Hs had standard PTOs. The very first ones, in 1939 and early 1940, had a smaller diameter PTO shaft. Still 6-splined, still turns the "right" direction and at the "right" RPM, but you need an adapter to use standard PTO implements with it.

However, those are fairly rare since they made the H from 1939 up into 1953, and everything after 1940 had the standard PTO.

I would personally love one of the last 1953 Hs with the factory disk brakes.

I definately recommend the H. I have a '51 with loader. Use it all the time, most useful tractor, from baling hay to moving dirt and mowing pasture. Great machines!!
Good luck.
