Delco Distributor Maintenance

Anyone know if these Delco distributors use grease or oil in the oil plug hole? It doesn't appear to have a weep hole on the back side like the IH distributors so I don't know if it would take grease through a zerk.

Also, does the drive take oil or grease? It has oil where the plug is when I opened it up. Then where the gears run had very little residue left, but I would assume the gears would use something like a 00 grease. It kind of smells like old gear lube. I've searched but can't find any info on this delco setup.

Gun grease, only about 1/4 to 1/2 of a pump - small amount. Same set up as the Cub.

Install zerk, grease. I left the zerks installed.

Since this set-up is basically the same as was used on Allis Chalmers W D, you could probably find maint. instructions through those sources. I expect Eugene has it about right, though.

I put a zerk in the distributor and tried to pump grease in, no go. This doesn't appear to have a weep hole on the backside like the IH distributor to allow the air to escape. I've search everywhere I can think of for maint. instructions and have come up empty handed.

Guessing old, hard, grease. Happens. Won't accept grease.

If you don't want to disassemble and clean it up, -- couple drops of light weight oil in each opening. Let soak. More oil.

My 2 WD Allis' have the same distributor. No mention of maintenance in the Owner's Manual or Service Manual.

The distributor had oil in it, no grease, when I pulled the plug. Not sure if these have Oilite bushings in them, but if they do, everything I have found recommends Oil rather than grease for those type of bushings.

just fixes one the other day, grease was like a rock, disassembled it, dropped it in to a coffee can of gas for a couple days and it came out nice and clean , all that old crap gone

Not uncommon to find oil separated from old grease.

for the info, JoeB. I was hoping someone had an official Delco service manual with this info.
