That same engine was used in the H, one of the most dependable tractors of it’s time. I don’t think there were any glaring flaws with them.

I would recommend you check out youtube channel Squatch253. He is finishing up a Farmall H restoration including some engine work, and recently acquired an IH/McCormick W4 and a Super W4 to work on in the future.

Not a flaw, but here is something to be aware of. I believe the water pump uses packing and a packing nut to seal the shaft. This was common back when it was designed. But most youngsters are not familiar with them. If the water pump leaks water at the shaft, you may simply need to tighten the nut a bit or add some packing to reseal it.

Re: C152 engine flaws
I have never had a problem with these engines. Very reliable, if it has not rained and been outside in it, or out of gas, it will start. I have started them in -10 degree temps with half choke, and otherwise it really doesn't need choke. I have noticed mine to be really powerful and the casting date dose not line up with the transmission so I think it might have a combine or power unit engine. Really torquey and powerful when you get a good engine though.

Re: C152 engine flaws
Had 2 H's here and friends had them. All were easy starting on old 6-v batteries! Not many will do that, so ya that was probably the best engine IH ever had.

Intake/Exhaust manifold....Mine lost more and more power every year.......water drops down and rusts out between the two....so it sucks exhaust gases and loses power....Check to see if its rusted out...starts fine....no power...I got a new manifold and solved the problem!!!!
