IH wrenches for the H

Postby Jim in SC » Fri Jan 25, 2019 7:26 pm

I'm not a collector of wrenches, but am interested in finding out what wrenches came with the Farmall H when it was new. Mine is a 1951 model. Any ideas? :help:

Dad bought his 41 used, and I am not sure how much the tools changed over the years, but original tools for his included:
spark plug wrench
pneumatic (spark plug) tire pump
drawbar wrench
axle clamp wrench

Pretty sure there were a few more, but can't remember them at present.

I especially remember the axle clamp wrench. Me using it 65 years ago.

Awesome picture, John! Whose shadow is in the picture?

Thanks for responding - I did buy one of those wrenches that you're using in the picture - no reason - I just wanted one for the tool box. I doubt I'll get any more wrenches though. The H itself is my collection. Here's a picture of me at my older cousin's farm in Rockford, Iowa in 1960. I'm second from left up on the hay wagon. Not sure of the year of his H - I'm guessing 1950-ish. My cousin is center with the RR hat.

Good memories!

That is my mother, though the sun apparently so low it made her look 20 feet tall.

Didn't know they came with a tool kit. Wondering if an open end wrench for tightening the waterpump packing nut was supplied. Had my waterpump rebuilt at a shop in Houston Tx. Have needed to slightly tighten the packing nut about 5 times since installation. A standard 7/8 wrench would not fit in front of the fan blades for adjustment. Needed to shorten it to 6" long so it would fit within the fan shroud. Then grind the sides of the open ended part down to a slim profile allowing it to fit on the packing nut and tighten it, while clearing all the other pieces that are mounted in front of the fan blade. Have enjoyed the pictures and explanations that went with them. The hayrack with bales brings back memories of learning what real work feels like. When I was eleven Dad bought a used Allis Chalmers round bailer, bringing an end to stacking our alfalfa hay. He was kind enough to bring the weight of the bales down from 80 lbs. to 60 lbs. The 1st clue my days as the stacker operator were over also. The hay field was about a mile from home and for some reason he never carried a water jug. We would drive to the hay field, load the hayrack with around 120 bales then head back home. By the time we got home I was so thirsty I would rather have taken my chances and jumped down into the well for a drink. Instead I always waited for him to start the pumpjack that sat within the frame of the windmill. Prime it, then wait for that glorious 50 deg. water to fill the metal cup. He then would watch me drink before he would have his own. When it was his turn he would roll the full cold metal cup over his sweaty forehead before taking his first drink. Thanks for bringing 52 year old memories back to life. My back even hurts now!!

We always carried one of these on the tractor, or left setting under a shade tree in the field or along the edge.

Plain old well water. LOL and everyone drank out of the same keg, just put it up to your mouth and took a few swigs. Back then, especially when it was hot in the hay field you didn't care who you drank after.

Yup, so true! I also remember drinking an ice cold Frostie root beer during hay and straw baling. Great memory!
