2150/hardner

Postby DanR » Fri Aug 27, 2010 1:19 pm

I got a gallon of IH/Case Iron Guard from the IH dealer. Nowhere on the label does it say anything about hardener. I ask if the formula had been changed, only a dumb look, but he said they had not carried hardener for any IH Case or New Holland paint for 'years'. :? :?:

I don't have the information as to the hardener to use or how much to use, but, I seem to remember Brent in Acton, CA had used hardner with good results some time ago. Maybe check him out for the ratio, hardener, ect.

I have gotten some confusing information about paint from my local IH dealer as well. They told me Iron guard in rattle cans come with hardener somehow.

I just bought another quart of IH iron guard enamel.
THe dealer also sold me reducer, and a jar of hardener!!!

I do not have the jar of hardener handy right now to verify, but I think it is Vaalspar.

There are plenty of warnings on the forum here about the hazards of hardener.

I made one of these for under $30, and it worked well. I only plan on painting this one tractor so I could not justify 400 or more to use a pressurized respirator once.

If I was going to paint a lot, I would buy a commercial pressurized respirator

I painted our "M" with Valspar Restoration Series Paint, which says on the can it contains addtives to improve durability and gloss. I added Valspar hardener and thinnner, 8:1:1. Turned out fairly well. Last year I used the JD Classic green from the dealer with hardener and thinner, same ratio and got good results. I am told it is made by Valspar as well...

My case dealer said the same thing about the hardner! No Case IH in Arkansas had it!!! BUT I did my homework and found out that JD Dealers sell the same brand of paint and hardner, Got my 2150 from caseIH and the hardner from JD in the sate! LOL

I think it was 1 pint of hardner for a gallon, If your good with math ya can do all the #s on it and find out how much it takes! My body paint man did my cub.

My IH dealer had the hardener right next to the paint. But boy was it pricey!

The paint jobs really look nice with the hardener, but don't overlook the risks you are taking. It should not be used unless you have a fresh air supplied respirator, never use it with a simple filter mask.

Dan:

CaseIH Iron Gard is essentially Dupont Centari or so I have been assured by my Auto Finish pros at Universal which is now part of the NAPA family. I have been using the Centari line with the 2150 successfully for about 6 years now and it works well. The basic mix ratio is 8:1:2: 8 parts paint, 1 part hardener, 2 parts reducer.

Dupont Centari Acrylic Enamel Technical Data Sheet

You gotta use a decent downdraft booth or External Fresh Air system - don't take chances. I have been spraying catalyzed finishes for almost 30 years. I didn't do what I should have. I now have COPD and Pulmonary Fibrosis. You don't need that... it ain't fun  :!: :(
