Working on a Farmall 340

I just brought this tractor home and will be starting the task of getting it running for my cousin. He also wanted me to get all of the sheet metal put back on and give it a good checking over. Hopefully things go well without to many surprises.

Had to get a couple other things done before starting on this project. Its been sitting just outside the door of the shop with a tarp over it waiting to get inside. I was able to use a small Harbor Freight winch to pull it inside. Now I can get it checked over and see what I need to get it running.

A 12v conversion has been started on this tractor with an alternator already mounted up. I will see if I can round up a VR and a 12v coil and start wiring things up.

If it's the alternator in the picture it may have a built in voltage regulator.

I need to pull it off the tractor to clean it up so I will check it out at that point.

I have a 350U parts tractor that had a 12v conversion done so I pulled the coil off of it to use on the 340. I did a quick test on the coil and it checks OK. We'll see for sure once its hooked up.

I connected the wires to the coil, hooked a battery up, and checked for spark. looks good so far.

, ajhbike. I just meant its good to have eye's on what I am doing in case you see something that I may be doing wrong or know of a better way.

What is the gauge it is connected to?

That looks like a Murphy gauge, a temperature gauge with an electrical contact that closes when the temperature goes past a set limit. The box is probably a relay that connects the gauge to the ignition system to cut off the engine if it overheats. You don't usually see them on a tractor. They are usually on power units that operate unattended.
