6v generator w/cutout question

Postby mikes5785 » Thu Aug 31, 2017 9:53 am

I have a 49 C with a 6v generator and I'm told a cutout (IIRC, the rotary switch on the dash has 6 or 8 positions). I'm trying to figure out how this thing functions.

1. Being 6v positive ground which way will the ammeter point when charging the battery?
2. What should the output voltage be in low charge? High charge?
3. What are all the possible switch positions, it "seems" to me there are more positions available in the switch than I was told, but I do suffer from CRS.

Thanks

Mike

The amp gauge will show a positive charge if it's charging doesn't matter if it's negative or positive ground. If you're 100% sure it's charging and it shows negative charge all you have to do is switch the wires on the amp gauge to correct it. Not sure about the rest of your questions, someone will be able to tell you.

If it has the normal light light switch for a cut out, positions are L (low charge, approx 2 amps), H (high charge, approx 9 to 11 amps), D (dim lights with high charge), B (bright or less dim lights, plus high charge). L is for extended run time to keep from overcharging the battery and boiling it dry. H is for faster recharge when only running for short periods or a lot of stop and start type use.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

A cut-out charging system does regulate voltage, the battery does. If working, the voltage will be whatever it takes to push the amperage John listed. If you measure battery voltage with the engine off and again with the engine up to speed, the increased voltage will tell you it is charging.
