Into the SC Transmission - Pictures Added

I started the transmission repair today. The first job was to remove the seat and tool box assembly. The bolts inside the tool box were covered with almost 60 years of gunk. Almost impossible to get to. Had to use a church-key to scrape away the crud to get a socket on them. Finally could remove the tool box and seat. Tomorrow, with the grandsons help, we will remove the top of the transmission. I will try and post some pictures.

The top is like trying to manage a man hole cover......an extra set of hands would be great. 8)

Thanks for the heads up, Harold, I had to promise both grandsons not to take the top loose until they got here this morning to help. I will clean it off and loosen a few bolts then wait for them this morning. they should be here by 9:30 AM as they just live over the hill. I can also recruit Annie if necessary.

Today I got into the transmission with both hands and found the problem. The oiler gear is broken. A 3-inch section of teeth is missing. :( :( :(

We split the tractor and I repaired the problem. Now we are ready to mate the two halves again.

Today, with the help of Annie, Amy, Mike, Nathan and Logan we got it back together. I doubt the grease in the transmission had been changed in 60 years. It was thick and sticky. Annie didn't know if she should wash my clothes or burn them. She probably felt the same when she looked at me. Still have some repairs to make (new brakes) but glad it is back in one piece.

Dixonsc, I filled her up with straight 90w gear lube. Seems to work OK. I think 80-90 would also work OK.

Yup, if it says "gear lube" on the bottle, and is wet and oily, you pretty much can't go wrong.

Of course if the container says, "play sand" or "kitty litter," you might want to reevaluate before you start pouring.
