Farmall Cub

On one of the C's, the starter won't engage, it will grind etc, but it won't go all the way in/out to touch the flywheel? today I took it apart, and oiled it all up, cleaned it nice, and now it just usually "zooms" it spins, but doesn't grind a whole lot till the end, I was wondering if I could be missing something inside? can anybody give me some pointers as to why it's doing this?

Johnny - have you tested the starter out of the tractor? When you make connection the bendix unit should "snap" out with some "authority" and quickly retract when the voltage is removed.

nope BD, I totally forgot too I was thinking of doing that before I put it back on, and totally forgot, I guess I'll try that tomorrow and see what happens...

Take a good look at the teeth on the flywheel ring gear and on the starter gear. If they are chewed up you may be able to dress them with a file or burr wheel.

Check the flywheel and bendix. Sounds like either the teeth on the bendix or on the flywheel are rounded a bit. Like Bigdog said, you can try to file them. Replace the bendix, or flywheel ring gear if needed. Flywheel ring gear would be PIA. The ring gears can be spun 90-180 degrees also. Most tractors stop in the same spot. Had this happen on a WD9. Good luck. Hopefully it is the bendix.

thanks for the help guys, i took the starter off,a nd the ring gear looks really bad... it's never started witht eh starter for me i dont' think, it looks like most of the ring gear is gone, I haven't had the time to crank it slowly with teh crank to see ifn it is.... and I imagine the starter works just fine, but I'll try to put juice to it this week so see ifn the starter works... can the ring gears be flipped over? like front/back? so could I put the bad side towards the front of the tractor, and use the good side towards teh rear?

yes you can flip the ring gear over on the flywheel. Another trick untill you can split the tractor is to leave the ignition off (for safety) and rock the tractor a little in high gear till you see the fan blade move a quarter turn or so. That will get you away from the section with bad teeth and the starter may work.

Thanks Stan, I think most of the flywheel, if not all of it is worn... i'm tryin to sell the tractor, so ifn i get to it before i sell it, i do, ifn i dont' i don't... we're pretty good at splittin the C's it's not hard i spose either...
