SC steering

on my brother's Super C with WF it has ALOT of play in the steering, is there anyway to "tighten" it up? It also has a bigger steering wheel, which I know makes it seem like it has more play than it does... the manual doesn't seem to say too much...

Thanks for any suggestions

Johnny - a little detective work will help you find out where the slop is in the steering. Check for play in the steering shafts and gears and also in the WF linkage and tie rods. You may be able to address the area of worst wear and reduce the slack enough to be tolerable. Not much different than troubleshooting a cub steering problem.

The 240 Utility I recently bought has the same problem of way too much play in the steering column. I can turn the steering wheel almost a full turn without feeling any resistance against the front wheels. I believe the SC has a similar steering arrangement.

First of all, there are three universal joints in the steering linkage. If all or any of these are worn, steering looseness results. Just watch each U joint while the wheel is turned and you can see if there is slop in the joint. If you only have 10 or 20 degrees of looseness in the steering, replacing the spider bearings in the U joints may be all you need to do. IH has the spiders and they are about $16 each.

If however you have alot more play, you may have a worn worm gear and/or steering gear in the steering housing. Watch where the steering shaft goes into the steering housing and if it takes almost a full turn until the wheels are actuated, that is likely the problem. A much more costly and time consuming job than rebuilding the U joints. Bates has replacement worm gears for $360, but I haven't found a place to get the other steering gear. I understand the worm gear is much more likely to be worn, but haven't gotten into mine yet. I have worn U joints and steering/wormgear.

Hope you only need U joints rebuilt!! The I & T Manual has descriptions of all this for the 200/230/240 . . . . there must be something similar for the SC. Good luck!

Thanks Paul, I think the U joints are fairly good shape, becuase when i hold on the shaft after a U joint and turn the wheel, there isnt' much play... but I think for 360$ I can wait on the gear, or look for a used one  thanks though, that's good to know that I can get teh spiders from IH..

Thanks again
