Make a hole in it and pry or yank it out. If they really need replacing, rust has thinned them down to where you can jam a screwdriver in and pop them out. I suppose worst case is one so solid you need to drill a hole in the center and pop it out with a slide hammer. When you get the old one out, clean all the crud out of the block that you can get at.

Got the tractor split today.
Question, how do I remove the throw out bearing ?
Looks like I have to remove the linkage?

I guess what I should be asking is how to remove the bearing carrier

I haven't touched one in a long time. I don't think there are any hidden secrets to getting it apart. It has to be something similar to either:
1) Something keeps the carrier from turning. Undo it and give the carrier 1/4 turn to pull it off.
OR
2) You have to unpin the release yoke from the rest of the linkage. Pull the yoke and carrier off together.

There should be a description in the Service Manual, but this might help from the Parts Manual. Note there are 2 different style clutch linkages.

Oops! It pays to go back to the beginning and review the post before starting to type!!!

It was politely pointed out that the tractor under discussion was a Super C, not a Cub! Sorry about that.

Got the tractor split and figured out how to get the throw out bearing removed and installed a new one.
Flywheel is at the machine shop for resurface.
Got the old freeze plug out and have a new brass plug. What are you guys using for a sealant around freeze plugs ?

Getting everything put back together but ran into a problem.
I’m trying to get the tractor back together but it stops about an inch before the two halves come together.
I used the clutch alignment tool and the shaft goes into the clutch but stops. Things seemed lined up pretty good.
I’m thinking it’s not going into the pilot bushing. At a closer look the top of the bell housing is closer than bottom when looking at the engine. But not buy much at all.
Any tips on getting it back together?

Try to get the gap at the top and bottom lined up perfect. Put the transmission in neutral, engage the pto and turn the pto shaft a little with a pipe wrench or any tool you can get on it. The splines may not be lined up right on the shaft and clutch disc.

Got everything back together with new clutch, throw out bearing, throw out bearing carrier and the new ring gear worked great but when I tried to put it in gear it would just grind.
After adjusting clutch pedal free play to 1 7/16 inch same thing happened.
After adjusting the pedal to about 1” of free play I am able to get the tractor in gear but still grinds some.
Not really sure what’s going on.
Any tips or advice from anyone that’s gone through this ?

Did you replace the pilot shaft bushing? If so it could be tight and not letting the shaft stop turning.

Yes I replaced the pilot bushing with a new one one that came with the clutch.
Do new ones normally fit tight? if so do new ones ever need to be fitted ?
How would you make sure it’s not to tight

A lot of times when new pilot bushings are installed they need to be reamed to size because they get tighter after installation. You May can push the clutch pedal down and leave the tractor in gear for a little bit while running and it may wear in if your lucky.
