2wheelsadam, I have a Woods L306 on my Farmall C and it really is a fantastic set up. Mow about 5 acres a week with it and it works well. Only advice would be to use 2 lift points--one on each rockshaft--and level the deck with turnbuckles!

Steve, now that looks like a lot of fun! I tell folks that mowing my yard is the only farming I get to do and that looks like a lot of farming.

For sure Bill!! That little C is a good runner, handles and steers like a dream and is no work at all!! I mow probably 5 acres with the C, 30 with the Jubilee and Woods XT172 bush hog and enjoy every minute of it! As you so aptly stated, that is my farming as the original owners of the 48 acres sold all the topsoil and I have Wilson County limestone sticking up all over the place. Gotta watch closely with the L306 and XT172 as the rocks seem to "grow"!! Couldn't trip a plow safely anywhere around here!!!

Could I get some advice from you guys regarding a mower on a C. I recently installed a Woods U306 under my C. Everything has mounted okay and actually mows really nice, however it is having trouble keeping the belt on. I put a new belt on and after some tinkering it did real well for a while but has now gotten to where the belt just keeps jumping. Where I think I am doing something wrong is the belt twist. Where the directions say that left side belt should have a 3/4 turn twist coming back to the idler is what is confusing me. Any ideas about where and how I could be messing this up?

I would like to revive this. I am getting desperate. I determined that my mower is a L306, not a 306U. I absolutely have tried everything I can think of. Researched it to no end but cannot get the new belt to stay on. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I am not familiar with the wider mowers, multiple spindles, that use a single belt. But there are some tips from a Woods 42C that may help your case. Mount the PTO pulley such that the belt is as close to perfectly vertical as possible going to the mule drive. Then mount the mule drive, and choose a length of belt, that makes the belts as horizontal as possible going from the mule drive to the mower pulley. Lastly make sure the left and right sides of the belt are at the same height, as well as being horizontal. Again, you may have to change belt length to accomplish all of that.

Last note, my experience has been that once a belt jumps off, it is then prone to do that again. So use your existing belt to evaluate all the tips above, then buy a new belt at the proper length once this set-up has been achieved. Hopefully you will find something in these tips that will help explain your issue.

Thank you Rick. Actually there is a jewel in what you said. The verticle alignment of the drive pulley and the idlers may just be something I need to adjust. Already ordered a longer new belt so that some changes can be made. I think I became too fixated on trying to make the original stuff work.

Keep in mind that you can adjust the front-rear position of the mower to allow for different belt lengths unless you're already max'ed out to clear the rear tires. I'm sorry the mower has been giving you so much trouble. To answer your earlier question, the 3/4 twist in the belt needs to be on the slack side. The slack side is the side that is coming off of the PTO pulley whereas the other side is the tension side. This should be on the right side of the tractor. I've attached a photo of that deck on my B.

Hate to disagree with Rick, but on a Woods 59 the outer spindle pulleys are at different heights. Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if the outside pulleys are in different positions on a wider Woods mower.

My Woods manual is in the Cubhouse now, or I would quote the numbers for you.

You are correct. The right side mule drive idler feeds the lowest groove in the center deck sheave. The left side mule drive idler pulls from the top groove in the center deck sheave. So I had the right mule drive idler at about 2.5" lower than the left as seen in the attached photo. This is the L306 mower deck that cuzinguido is talking about, as he bought it from me a few months ago.
