IH 340 - discuss it here ?

I will be getting a IH 340 soon. Is this the proper forum section to discuss a 340?

It belongs to my uncle who used it on his dairy farm and then to mow a small field once he retired. I have not seen this tractor yet but he said it has a loader, front blade, brush hog mower and a scoop for the 3pt hitch, and it is yellow... that is about all I know right now. I'll be going to see it and try to get it started on Wednesday this week.

I have started looking up what a 340 is and found that the Preventive Maintenance Manual for the 140, 240 and 340 is also for the Cub and Cub loboy which I am familiar with. That manual mentions the Farmall 340, the IH 340 Utility and IH 340 Industrial tractors. Are the three version all that different?

Under Edit:

Looking at the Case online parts system, I found a picture of the 340 and 340 Utility. The Utility tractor has the wide front end instead of the tricycle style front end.

No, this is the wrong forum for the 340. This is for the 100, 130, and 140 tractors, which are the "offset" style big brothers of the Cub.

As far as the three versions being "that different," not really, but there are some differences. Even so you need to be VERY specific in your documentation or people get confused. Just saying "340" will have people calling up and asking which version the documentation covers.

Paul, you are fine asking about the 340 here. :( There is no specific spot for a 340 and if a moderator defines it differently they will move it. My guess is it will remain here. Good luck with your acquisition. It has a pretty good lineup of equipment.

Never mind... The tractor isn't an IH 340. I went to look at it and saw that it is a 504 which is a little bigger than a 340.

I mentioned to my uncle it it wasn't a 340 and he said "Yup, the 340 was in the barn fire, and I replaced it with this one." That was a LONG time ago...

The 504 is, to some extent, an updated verson of the 340. The most appropriate place here to discuss that model is probably the Farmall H & Super H forum.

Yeah, it's a tough call which forum they belong in.

The 340 and 504 are basically the illicit love children of a 460 and a Super C, or IH's interpretation of a mullet (business in the front, party in back).

The engine and front end are heavily based on the Super C, while the rear end is pretty much the same as a 460's. 504 adds 3pt hitch, stretches the engine out to 153 cubes, and adds frame rails.

I plan on owning one of each, eventually.

I had a 340 for about 20 years. It was an unusual type. It was a row crop style, but with wide front end, no auxiliary hyd valves on rh side, no TA, but with a factory 3 pt hitch converted from 2 pt hitch. It had an independent pto with a live lift. Pretty slick for a 1957 model. Never saw another one like it. I have been told that conversion was used for mowing the highway right of way.

Good decent and reliable tractor.

I have always liked the 240 and 340 utility ones.
