140 air cleaner

Postby Indy4570 » Mon Mar 05, 2018 9:02 pm

when you buy a tractor that is 55 years old you can expect a few things might not be original anymore. So was the case with the air cleaner on my international 140 industrial in farmall clothing. here is a pic of what it came with. OK so its not much, so Enter Ebay....

so Ebay can be scary , you never know the disposition of the seller. well i was told about what that aircleaner should cost and I bought one, turns out it maybe wasnt the best deal as a few facts were not in evidence at the time of sale. One thing is a big dent in the tube and a slight bend, with only 2 pics in the listing it was hard to tell. with the naked eye the dent was painfully obvious. seller never mentioned it...go figure. Sooo, how to get a dent out of that pipe way down there next to the filter body.....

what dent? Ok who can tell me how I did it? no cutting or welding or heat was involved. I believe I removed some of the bend in the tub as well. At least I tried :P

Drove a metal pipe or round rod down inside the breather pipe?

well it wasnt quite that easy, I turned the tube on the pipe. I found a perfect sized pipe, smoothed off some rust. It already had an angle cut on the end I used to my advantage.Kinda helped it with a body hammer too. I beveled the end so it would gently push the metal and not cut it. I also greased it up good. Its a fine line between a fix and doing more damage that way. Don't mind the mess, the shop maid hasn't shown up to work in months

Shane I kinda figured you would be the one to guess correctly. I have seen so many pics of bent tubes and the fix has been bouncing around my head :P

I don't have all the tools but I have a good many and I do what i can with what i got. I have to say I enjoy tinkering with the old tractors. I contemplated repainting the air cleaner yellow as it was born to give me impetus to repaint the tractor as it should be. But honestly it may never be yellow and I figured it may as well match the rest of the tractor while that's being determined :P

Use a little JB weld on the cap. Sand and paint. Shouldn't hurt anything.
