Interesting A on Craig’s List

Postby Lt.Mike » Sat Feb 03, 2018 6:10 pm

Here’s an interesting one. I noticed the cultivators but also noticed it’s an early A with no hydraulic pump but where’s the hand lift?
There’s after market hydraulic controls but there’s no pump on the PTO.
Ok, then I noticed the belt driven pump off the alternator. It looks like an automotive power steering pump. Wow. Could that actually work?
If so it’s creative.
Mike

Family reunion at a church hall, years ago. There was an A or perhaps a C without hydraulics. Had a mid tractor mounted mower and a hydraulic pump from a vehicle mounted on the front right side of the motor.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Long ago, as in the early 90s when I was in high school, a neighbor had an A Farmall with add-on hydraulics. As I recall, the pump was part of the generator--it was mounted to the rear of the generator and was one unit--generator and pump together. It is a shame there were no camera phones then. I don't know what ever came of the tractor, but as I recall the whole setup looked factory, like something someone like M&W or Heisler made as an aftermarket attachment.

EDIT: Thanks to the good folks at google, I'm thinking this is where the generator/pump probably came from. I don't recall the pump portion being that big, but it's been close to 30 years.....if it was homemade, it was well done....

These pumps look to be much smaller that the factory unit. Can they possibly lift as well?

Power steering pump works great for adding hydraulics to a tractor. Back in the early "60s" my farther made a home made tractor out of "32" Chevy truck using a GM power steering pump for the FEL on it. We used it mainly for moving snow, but we loaded gravel with it occasionally. Looking back, I wish I still had the 32 Chevy back in it's original condition.

Ok , if you hooked up a pump like this in an early A, if you swapped out a torque tube and touch control from a super it’d work?

Depends on what you are trying to do. If use a touch control block off a Super A, then I don't see why not.
