New to me 140s
Pics of my latest farmall purchase. 2 140's (well one and most of another). One is in good condition, the other not so much. I bought both of these non runners with the hope of repairing them for my own use, but after bringing them home I'm not sure about one of them.
I have little experience with the 140s I have worked on the A model and super A model. Looking over these tractors I see several things that are different from the super a engine, dip stick, water pump, and charging system. One has a serial # tag (8846) the other has not. Can the year be determined by the engine serial #? There is also a tag under the seat with a number, will this give a date of birth?
edit 24961 engine serial #

You sure the last picture is a 140 and not just wearing 140 sheet metal?

Yes it has the serial tag on the torque tube and parts numbers match.

Re: New to me 140s
All of the cast codes that I have found show E, so by that I think that the serial # being 1960 those match up. I drained the trans yesterday and got a gallon of h20 which is not a good lubricant. I have not tried to turn the engine over but I don't have much faith that it is loose.

Re: New to me 140s
You've got some mix and match going on here. I'm not sure what, as I'm not sure which of your description applies to which tractor. E date codes ('59) go with serial 8846 ('60) but engine number 24961 dates to 1956. The serial tag under the seat came from a Super A. I can't read the second digit, but it must be a 2 or 3 from '52. The sheet metal on both is the later style which wasn't used until '63.

The serial # is from the better tractor, but I think there is some mix and match on that tractor also. Were parts for a super A interchangeable with the 140s? The better looking tractor also has a tag under the seat (210368) and does not have a tag on the torque tube, so it may be that both are johnny cash models.

Re: New to me 140s
Many parts interchange between the Super A/100/130/140. Some that won't individually interchange will if certain other parts are included in the swap.

Re: New to me 140s
24961 engine serial # has a part number on the block of 373125R1. The rough one has a part # of 387825R2. They both have water pump on the fan, and both have dip stick. Thanks for your help Jim

Re: New to me 140s
24961 with a water pump on the fan didn't make any sense to me until I realized 373125R1 is the block for a C-135 engine, didn't come in a 140. Recheck the other part number, you will probably find 367825R2.

Re: New to me 140s
Looks like a 140 steering box (steering wheel), Super A rear halfs on both of them, newer style cowls, can't tell that the C-135 engine is there, but if Jim says so then it is. The owner of these must have been a penny pincher and hard worker! I hate it when stuff is mismatched and not repaired correctly. I've seen a lot of 140s and they are mostly still original and not worn out to the point of swapping parts. Now the older Super A's I've seen anything imagined.

I guess that some people just use what they have available to them. I had high hopes for these two machines, but have been taken down to a small maybe on these. The one with the 135 engine runs well and everything but the charging system works as it should. I have had little time to do anything with them or the many others that are waiting on help, but some day there will be more time (wishful thinking).

Re: New to me 140s
If you just want a functioning tractor that you can use, there is no reason a mix-n-match can't fill the need. Knowing which pieces came from what model can help when you need parts.
