An almost gorgotten super A

Postby Craig roop » Sun Jun 04, 2017 7:37 pm

Hello group!
Thanks to this forum I was able to manage the repairs on my landlords 3 cubs.
But today we went back to the old farm and rescued Keiths grandfathers super A. Its a 1951 with serial #306356. It hasnt been ran in at least 25 years, but gramps put it away right! While it did have to sit outside, the important stuff was properly sealed and the engine has very good compression. The cooling system still holding the antifreeze from 25 years ago! It has new cap, rotor, points and condenser, plugs and wires, all 25+ years old.
Found a small amount of water in the steerring gear oil,but just a little. All fluids including hydraulic oil basically full. The grill is a little beat up,but may be ok after some TLC.
And to top it off,Keith gave me the '48 cub for working on his stuff. Shucks I'd do it for free!

Yes, Dewey, OK. Here's the link to the CubFest page on the forum: http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=94992

Congrats on working for and getting a free '48 Cub. Nice story.

Today was the day for the super A to run.
After lots of tlc, cleaning,a carb rebuild, gramps tractor runs like a top!
There was at first concern over low compression on #2 cylinder which corrected itself after the first start and run.
Probably had a sticky valve,or crap under the seat.
Anyway,my landlord and I both danced a little jig!
Turns out she hadnt run in over 30 years.
I wanted oil pressure before lighting it up,and with fresh oil it pressured right up! I connected power to the coil, pulled the start lever and she was running!
We topped up the hydraulic oil and exercised the hydraulics,no leaks!
This tractor thing has been so much fun,so satisfying,so cool to see the looks on my landlord's face!
Thanks to this forum, and its members for the props, and kind words! Lets just say it made all the difference!

The super A is doing well! Keith (my landlord) drives it around almost every day. I keep reading and studying, and notice the A has an adjustble main jet carb, but no aux fuel tank, etc. So im thinking since its a '51,it probably wasnt a dual fuel, just the carb was switched sometime in its life.???? What say you, members?

Does the carb also have a drain that is easily opened? That was standard on dual fuel carbs to get the distillate out before starting on gasoline. Do not overlook the possibility the hood has been changed.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Why,yes it does have a carb drain. And I think the hood and grille may have been changed because they are of a slightly different color than the rest of the tractor, and I know Keith's Gramps bought it used, and worked 50 acres with it.The transmission and gears are really quiet.2nd gear has a very slight whine, very slight, and its quieter than all 3 of the cubs, hope thats a good thing, and we changed all the fluids anyway. We did convert it to 12 volts, and fitted a 35 amp gm 3 wire alternator with a diode. Poor little stock 20 amp ampmeter stays pegged for about 10 seconds after start! It even hand cranks easy! Full choke, couple pulls ign off,ign on,part choke, hard pull against a compression stroke and she busts right off! TOO COOL!!!

Nothing unusual at all about that. Congrats on your experiences and success with these tractors. I'd say you are well on the way to a serious case of CLASSIC TRACTOR FEVER!! Enjoy the experience. :hattip:
