the push button for the starter, just runs from the battery to the push button stud on one side, from the other stud to the stud on the starter, the key switch is just a off/on switch that has power on one side coming from the amp meter and the other side of the switch powers the coil

If it is an original key switch, I have a key to fit it. Post a picture and I can help. ALso, if you want to get it started now, just put a jumper wire on the positive coil lead then to the positive battery lead.

Here's where I'm at , I'm self teaching myself on this rig , pro let water get in to 2 cyl and lock it up , I pulled the head after a month of soaking and finally have it free , I have one cal that's glass smooth and the other 3 are questionable they have a slight rough feel but no pits and hard rust damage , tried the starter and nothing , first question should I have a starter cyl , took starter to repair shop , it's good , I'm getting some power as my test light shows power at starter stud but no spin . My question now is do I go ahead and pull the pistons and pull the sleeves since the head is off and I pulled the pan , or since I have it free go ahead and reassemble and see what my compression test shows? I know it's a lot to focus on , but I feel like the end result and doing it right is worth the effort .

Why don't you hone the cylinders really well and put it back together. ?

Check dry and wet compression before going too far.
