New 140 Owner

Just picked this up yesterday. Haven't scraped the paint off the tag to get the serial number for it yet. Came with plow, disc, bush hog, spring cultivator, sickle mower, fertilizer bucket, box blade and many other misc pieces. Only had room on the trailer for the tractor and disc, will go up this weekend and get the rest.
Need to do some wire brushing on the implements or sandblasting and put some primer and paint on them. Any suggestions on paint to put on them?

Have to pull pretty hard to get it to start, and sometimes even push on the starter switch lever to get it to crank. Might need a cleaning?
Seems to run low RPMs or is that normal for a 140? I own a Cub and it has higher RPMs. I dont have a TAC to hook up to it. Just seems low.
I think it has been converted to 12v as well.

Where can I get a parts, owners manual? There was plenty on here for my cub but not for the 140.

Binder Books is by far the best place to get the manuals you need. They have the rights to print exact copies of IH material.

Nice Tractor.

1.) Is it 6 volt or 12 volt? Looks like either the front grill or the hood has been replaced. Saddle switch on starter tells me it originally was 6 volt.
2.) Looks like you have the "rare" fast hitch cushion spring on the bail........could be worth some $$$ to a collector or someone wanting one to use. I would say 90% don't have them.
3.) Get yourself a new steering wheel becuase the original one is down to the wire frame.
4.) Paint for the implements will be any farm/implement paint because it will eventually wear off in places. I would use Rustoluem Rusty Metal Primer and Rustoleum Farm Implement Paint. If you have the proper equipment, put hardener in your paint and it will hold up better.
5.) I have alot of 140's that will idle very low and smooth ( approx 400-500 rpm) if you let them. They will also idle up and run fast like they should. Your carburetor to governor linkage might need adjusting, which will be in the manual.
6.) Take that saddle switch off to see how bad the contact is worn. They are usually pretty cheap to replace or take to a good starter shop and have the whole thing overhauled. Better in the long run.

Not good at electricity and haven't put a multi meter on it. i am guessing a 12v. the only reason i say that is that there are some extra wires cut by the alt/gen

Although i did not use a multi meter I say this is a 12V system.
So would this be an alternator or generator.

Either way it sounds like bearings going out in it
Some initial sanding on the data plate reveals it is blank?

The easiest way to tell if your tractor is 12V or 6V is look at the battery (if it has one), 12V batteries have the terminals on the same side, 6V batteries the terminals are diagonal on the top of the battery. 6V battery pictured for reference of terminals.

Can I rebuild it? I have read posts about generator vs alternator, and heard both arguments. I think I would like to keep the generator.

Worth a rebuild or buy one?

The 140s came from the factory with 12-volt systems starting with serial 26801 (1964). That looks like what you have, 12-volt with the original generator. You have the later style sheet metal, which started at 23301.

A generator is easily rebuildable. However, if you take it to a shop and have a complete rebuild, it will cost more than a rebuilt alternator. That is why a lot of people substitute an alternator. However, a non-charging generator rarely needs a complete rebuild. A do-it-yourself clean-up with new brushes (maybe bearings) is usually adequate.

You will need to go through a test procedure to see if you even have a generator problem.

If origonality is an issue but you want an alternator, I've seen guys convert older cars with generators to 12 volt and have the generator rebuilt internally as an alternator. That way it still looks original.

u can still get them generators fixed u have to find a old starter gen shop they can fix that gen rite up.that looks just like my 1970 140 charging system.the 140 engine does sound slower running then the cub but it has a lot more power.nice looking tractor, don't let the rest of that stuff sit to long its worth a lot more money then cub stuff and harder to find

its possible you just have a faulty voltage regulator. Go through this test procedure first to see what the problem is.

Still hard to tell if 6 or 12v since the tag on the generator is missing. What is the serial number of the tractor? You never know if the Previous Owner didn't know and put a 12 volt battery on it by mistake.

I just had a Farmall 140 12v generator fully rebuilt by a good shop in Birmingham. The bill was $120.00. This is the 1st generator I've had to have rebuilt out of about (9) Farmall 140's I've worked on in the past 6 years. The others needed nothing or just a new voltage regulator.
