Steering Gear Housing Interchange Question

Postby AL Farmall Boy » Thu Dec 01, 2016 2:26 pm

Curious if the upper steering gear housing from a Farmall 'Super A' will fit an older Farmall 'A', and all of the internal parts from the Farmall 'A' work correctly ?

The part number for a 'Super A' is 6532DFX

The part numbers for an 'A' is 6532DAX and 6532DEX

I am guessing that the letter change at the end of the number denoted minor changes in the casting, but not sure about that. Please provide any info you may have.

It will work. If you ordered a replacement for the A in the 60s, you would have probably gotten the DFX housing.

You are correct on the part changes. 6532DX became 6532DAX and so on to 6532DFX. Generally, a later letter revision can be used on place of the earlier ones. If a change isn't backward compatible, they change the base part number. Forward compatibility isn't guaranteed. That is an earlier part may not substitute for a later one. The early Super As used 6532DEX but it was changed in later parts catalogs. It looks like 6532DEX was the latest version the time the last A/B parts catalog was published, so you still see DEX. Most likely, if you had an IH parts substitution list, it would call out DFX to replace DEX in all usage. The letters after the D work just like the digits after an R in R1, R2, etc.

I don't know what the story is on 6532DAX. Evidently there was some change from DAX to DBX that it isn't a direct substitute. The catalog says to use 6532DEY, which has to be part 6532DEX with some other thing attached to it.

All that said, 6532DFX should go right into an A. However, there evidently is some minor complication using it in a very early A that originally had 6532DX or 6532DAX (tractors through serial 36806). I couldn't find any other parts that changed at the same time.

I wonder what the complication would be? I would hate for the part to not work for some reason. It's not an easy one to ship.

You lucked out. After way to much looking, I found the answer in the parts catalog from 1942. The parts needed to change 6532DCX into 6532DCY are Q3615 lubricator (grease fitting added to upper bearing) and a 7/16 x 3-1/2 NF bolt, nut, and washer. So the added items are all hardware (and probably on the used part). I don't know why they needed to add the bolt. The only place that size bolt is used is the crank bracket (lower grill bracket).
