I've been shuffling things around getting things ready for a new carport after a decade of wanting. When I went to roll the A I picked up as a future project I found the shifter wouldn't go into gear and after fiddling with it the best I could do was second. I figured I knew why this was stuck and draining the trans I found I was right, water and a lot of it. This is what happens when you have too many irons in the fire, things like this get missed. Ok so at best I averted a disaster that would have happened if it froze but now how to free it up? I am thinking about popping the cover and dousing it down with PB blaster and letting it soak. Any other ideas?
Mike.

That is a good first step Lt.
My 130 froze the first winter I had it. Was not aware that there was water in there, and come spring I tried to move it and broke the oil slinger gear.
Have since swapped it out, but that was a biggy.
At least by opening it up, which does not take much work at all, you can get a good look and see what is going on.
Good luck.

I maybe in for something unpleasant because when I drained the tranny there was a bolt and washer in the bottom. I got the bolt out and it matches the bolts in the cover plate. The washer was big enough that it would not come out through the drain. Did something break or were they dropped by the PO? Won't know until I pull it apart.
I've been reading about the bucket trick to keep water out by hanging it on the shifter. Seems obvious now wish I knew of that one awhile back. My other tractors have sat dry under my shelter logic shed. The shed is great, even with the front left open its dry as a bone underneath. Its Achilles heel is snow. If you don't go out every other hour during a snow storm the snow will crush it. That chore is a PITA. That's why after a decade of fighting snow I am finally having a carport installed.
I can keep them all out of the elements soon.

You see the bolt above where it says "is this gear badly worn?", that matches what I found in the drain at the bottom of the trans. How would that come out if thats it?
First chance I get I'm going to pull the cover as now I've got to know.

Re: Water in an A's trans which is now stuck
Well I pulled it apart today. While everything was coated in a tan rusty water oil sludge mixture it was otherwise intact. Everything was stuck though The gears would not slide on the spline and the forks were stuck in their frame refusing to slide also. I sprayed everything in a bath of PB Blaster, let it soak then a WD40 rinse. With patience and gentle coaxing I got everything free again moving as it should and the penetrating fluids cleaned it all up nicely. Its a 100% recovery. The gears show some wear as you'd expect but aren't bad at all. On the bolt and washer found in the bottom, I have no idea where they came from. Nothing is broken and I can not find where anything is missing.
Must have been a PO misadventure.
