Clutch alignment tool

Postby RanchsA » Tue May 24, 2016 10:24 am

Well I had planned on just replacing my pilot bushing because I had the tractor split. The fella I ordered from cancelled my order I just found out after waiting the last 3 weeks for it to show... I'm going to measure mine (probably should have done that in the first place instead of waiting) to see how close it is to "new". And if close to new I'm going to start assembling I've decided. I've not had much luck finding an alignment tool for these tractors. Are there any tips out there for this, or does anyone have a source that sells them? I'm getting a little antsy to see if I did this right.

Got a Harbor Freight anywhere near you?

They sell a universal clutch alignment tool with several tapered mandrels and interchangeable pilot studs for installing many different types of clutches. I used one to install the clutch on my '53 Cub the first time and it worked well.

First time, because I then re-split the tractor at the transmission to deal with the input shaft seal. Like a moron, I pushed the clutch pedal while the input shaft was out of the clutch disk, and it must've moved because the tractor wouldn't go back together. Like a moron, I forced it back together and tried to run it. Guess what? The clutch blew. The new clutch came with a plastic alignment tool which I've used a couple times.

Thanks Matt. I do have a harbor freight close by. You wouldn't happen to have the part number for that tool would you? When I do a search on their website I'm not having any luck turning anything up.
Thanks,
randy

Thanks Dale. Will the cub clutch tool work with the A? I thought the bushing on the cub had a smaller inner diameter?
Mike what diameter dowel did you use? I had thought about making one from wood myself. I was thinking of using a 3/4 or 7/8 worked down a bit to fit in bushing and then build it up with duct tape or something on the plate end.
Painting up bolts this week and can hopefully get some assembly done. The bushing in my spare motor is good (put a caliper in it) so if the one on the redone motor (not enough space to check it on the motor stand) is a bit worn I can use that one. Hoping the grease hydraulic method I saw in a youtube video removes the one from the spare easily if I do have to use it.
Long weekend coming maybe I'll get to hear her come to life again??
Thanks again.

Well isn't that special... Can't find it on the HF website using typical search features.

I know it was hanging in with the automotive hand tools like the ring compressors and gear pullers.

Package is long gone, along with it the item number. Sorry.

On edit, I found the part number, and it's 66539. They no longer carry it.

Honestly Ranch I can't remember because I happened to have a wooden dowel on hand that fit perfectly inside of the splines of the clutch. I never bothered to measure it because it was sorta an unorthodox idea that just popped into my head during installation.

Find something round, preferably pretty close to the size of the pilot bushing. Get some duct tape, wrap it around the end until it fits the pilot busing fairly snug. Measure out where the clutch disk will be on your round stock, then wrap duct tape around it until it fits the clutch disk.

Thanks for all of answers. I've got a hunk of dowel and duct tape ready to go. My bolts have their last coat of paint on the so now we will see if we can get the motor off the stand. And back where it belongs.
