overheat

Postby jdeere86 » Sun Apr 12, 2015 3:12 pm

hey all

just drained oil , replaced oil pan gasket , oil filter - filled with 15w-40 rotella - started up and noticed after running for a minute or so that the engine block area got real real hot - wondering if i should have just used straight 30w or what could be going on?? i did put some sea foam in with new oil

Did the oil pressure come up? Problem is not the type of or weight of oil.

Coolant level? Coolant circulating problem?
I have an excuse. CRS.

oil pressure goes right up about 2/3rds then settles around 1/2 way - it did not overheat before changing the oil ... does have fuel sitting in it through the winter , maybe thats part of problem?

coolant level is good

Stuck thermostat? Coolant circulation problem?

Since oil pressure comes up - not the problem. Since engine starts and runs - fuel not the problem.

If Its a Cub there is no thermostat in it. If it is a tractor with a thermostat in it take it out and test it in a pan of water put on heat the stat should open just before the water reaches boiling point. This is just a crude test but it will tell you if the problem is the stat. Otherwise you have a blockage somewhere in the cooling system.

Replace the thermostat, first thing. Probably less than $10-.

What tractor do you have? Most of the Super A were thermo siphon, which did not have a thermostat. I think the late ones and the 140, etc. had water pumps and thermostats though.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I think it's an IH 140. Johndeer86 also mentioned a standard Cub. But the placement of the post indicates the 140.

Yeah it is a 140 - what is throwing me off is that it did not seem to have any sort of overheating trouble just a week ago before i changed oil - got out of work too late tonight to look at it more - went to buy some 93 octane on break and the only gas station in a 30 mile radius was fresh out

I realize this is a stupid question, but is there something covering the front of the radiator by chance?

Would not hurt to check / inspect fanbelt.
