Farmall A Fan

Postby AgTires4295 » Sat Feb 21, 2015 1:14 pm

Hey Farmall Family, I've recently discovered an issue with my A. I had been hearing a vibrating/grinding noise on start up and initially throught the starter wasnt disengaging. This sound lasts only several seconds and then slowly disappears. I ruled this out and narrowed the sound to the engine. Worried it had suddenly no oil, I checked and topped off (not an issue). I then ran out of time and had to abandon the whole thing as the wife was begging me to come inside (we have a three month old and a two year old) to take over fatherly duties. Before I ran inside, I quickly tarped it but had an idea to jiggle the fan. Well, that was it. The fan is as loose as Otis Campbell on a Saturday night.

My question is this: Am I able to tighten the fan WITHOUT taking the hood off, draining the coolant, removing the radiator, etc etc. I could figure this out by taking the time to go look myself but it's under a foot of snow, tarped and I'm at work dealing with the world's problems. I would think I'd be able to but dont want to work out a time slot with the wife on my only day off and have it take longer than anticipated since my time is worth more than gold anymore.

Any help is very much appreciated!

Depends on where it is loose. If it is the mounting bolt, it can be tightened by holding the nut while turning the shaft (nut is in a slotted recess). If it is the fan on the hub, it will have to be removed and checked as to what the problem is, but a replacement will probably be necessary. For that JP Tractor, one of the sponsors at the bottom of the page is a good choice.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I was just recently changing the generator belt on my SA when the whole fan hub slid forward and wouldn't move back into place. Ended up pulling the hood and removing the radiator. The nut that holds the hub and viscous clutch together and come off. In the process the seal on the back of the hub was discovered to be bad. I need to see if parts are available for it before buying a new hub assembly.

Forget about the seal on the back side of the fan hub. It isn't needed and was never supplied as a replacement part.

Great to know. I was able to get out and look at it again. It seems as though my fan is sliding forward as well, although it doesn't appear to be missing any nut. Now I guess I need to bite the bullet, remove everything and see about tightening it up. I'm really not looking forward to dumping the fresh coolant that I just put in. I can't remember... Is there a gasket that is between the radiator and the frame?

Well I just Googled my question and there is from what I can see. Hoping I can reuse the same gasket again. Third time is the charm (hoping).
